Direct measurement of bronchial arterial flow.

چکیده
THE normal bronchial arterial blood flow provides only a very small portion of the blood flow through the lungs.' 2 Since it supplies oxygen and nutrients to the bronchial musculature and mucosa, it may have importance for pulmonary mechanisms far beyond that expected on the basis of its small flow. After giving up its oxygen on passage through the pulmonary parenchyma, this flow passes into the pulmonary system where it may contribute oxygen-depleted blood to the pulmonary venous outflow. Precapillary anastomoses probably play a minimal role under normal circumstances.' Because of the great potential for proliferation of the bronchial vascular system in congenital anomalies and inflammatory conditions, and after experimental obstruction of the pulmonary artery,' ° the flow through this system may also have relevance in the evaluation of circulatory mechanisms. The normal anatomy of the nutrient arteries supplying the parenchyma of the lung was studied long ago by Leonardo da Vinci, von Haller, and Kiittner. The great variability in the topographical origin was early recognized. Cockett and Vass have reviewed the pertinent literature. Kiittner demonstrated that dye injections into the aorta resulted in the staining of the bronchial mucosa in man; he described the posterior bronchial arteries in the dog and showed that the branches to the right and left lung often had a common trunk with a medial intercostal artery, emerging from the aorta at the sixth thoracic segment. Berry et al. confirmed the arrangement desci'ibed by Kiittner. Notkovich, in an extensive study

Presentation of a Non-invasive Method of Estimating Arterial Stiffness by Modeling Blood Flow and Arterial Wall Based on the Determination of Elastic Module of Arterial Wall
Introduction: Arterial stiffness is an important predictor of cardiovascular risk. Several indices have been introduced to estimate the arterial stiffness based on the changes in the brachial blood pressure. Since the substitution of the blood pressure changes in the central arteries such as carotid with the blood pressure changes in the brachial results in error in the blood...
متن کاملBronchopulmonary arterial shunting without anatomic anastomosis in the dog.
The effects of bronchial arterial administration of vasoactive substances on the pulmonary circulation were studied by a new technique for selective catheterization of a bronchial artery in intact dogs. In most experiments, this technique permitted pressor agents to be distributed mainly to one lung with smaller amounts to the other lung. The intercostal arteries were avoided, and in all but 2...
متن کاملHuman bronchial artery blood flow after lung Tx with direct bronchial artery revascularization.
The inaccuracy of measuring human bronchial artery blood flow has previously been considerable. En bloc double-lung transplantation with bronchial artery revascularization (BAR) using a single conduit offers the unique opportunity of direct measurement of the total bronchial artery blood flow. In eight en bloc double-lung-transplanted patients with complete BAR, the basal blood flow was measure...
متن کاملExchange of blood between pulmonary and systemic circulations via bronchopulmonary anastomoses.
• The existence of brouchopulmonary anastomoses has led to the general belief that the blood from the aorta and bronchial arteries can reach the pulmonary vessels and left atrium. There is reasonable evidence to suggest that the reverse can occur. Three observations pertain to the flow of blood from the pulmonary artery to the bronchial veins and right atrium: (a) In 1931 Berry and Daly perfuse...
متن کاملResponses of the bronchial veins in a heart-lung-bronchial preparation.
•Almost all previous attempts to study the bronchial circulation have been limited to measurements of blood flow in the bronchial arteries and bronchopulmonary anastomoses. There have been two studies devoted to estimations of blood flow in the bronchial veins of the normal dog. In 1931, Berry and Daly perfused in dogs either the posterior bronchial artery of one lung or the entire aortic segme...
